The James P. Geiss Foundation (Geiss Foundation) is a private, non-profit operating foundation, established in 2001 thanks to generous endowment from Mrs Jeanette D. to honor the original and reflective scholarship that Jim Geiss, a lifelong Ming scholar, exemplified.  Jim's family and friends want the Geiss Foundation to:

(1)

continue his spirit of scholarship;

(2)

keep alive his boundless curiosity and to uphold his standards of historical research; and

(3)

encourage new directions in Ming studies through the funding of academic and non-academic research projects related to the Ming dynasty (1368-1644).

One goal of the Geiss Foundation is to study subjects related to the Ming dynasty through sole or partial funding in the following areas:

academic conferences or advanced seminars;

publications;

individual research grants;

outreach programs for high school students and the general public;

annual lecture series featuring eminent scholars or experts

We also want to popularize Chinese art and traditional artifacts by making available exhibits of original Chinese artwork, replicas and traditional Chinese folk crafts from various regions at schools, associations and relevant non-government organizations. To this end, we will make available a small selection of handcrafted items, which can be bought through donations to the Geiss Foundation.

Briefly stated, we want to encourage innovative perspectives and interpretations in approaching Ming history. Established, mainstream academic research has its place and its advocates; at the Geiss Foundation, we want to fund both academic research as well as finance and investigate the many new vistas that current scholastic research has yet not explored.
