Types of Grants

The Geiss Foundation will offer two types of grants:

(1)

Project Grants and Geiss Fellowships   Until we can allocate additional funding, most grants given will be Project Grants, which amounts will range from $2,500.- to $10,000.00.  Project grants are designed to support new or enhance existing research projects in the field of Ming studies.  Project grants are not necessarily confined to individuals and may include Geiss Foundation sponsorship of related conferences and publications about Ming studies.

(2)

Geiss Fellowships will be granted to qualified scholars in or outside of academic institutions.  Stipends start at $35,000.00 a year for a period of 12 months.  When the proposed research so requires, Geiss Fellowships may also include roundtrip economy travel to China or to the destination of study.  Geiss Fellowships may not be extended or renewed. The Foundation will help, when possible, all grant recipients and Geiss Fellows to publish such papers in manuscript form in journals and books, or electronically on appropriate websites.

Individual grants may not be offered each year so check with us about timing.  We expect to accept the first applications for Geiss Fellowships in 2007 for stipends for 2008.

Geiss Foundation Individual Project Grants

The Geiss Foundation intends to award Geiss Foundation Project Grants on a regular but not annual basis; the first of the Individual Project Grants of between $2,500.- to $10,000.- for innovative research studies on the Ming was offered in 2004.  Applicants seeking funding must submit their applications prior to 1 October of the year before grants are made; grant awards will be announced in April of the year after application.

Our Academic Advisors will review all applications.  The core Evaluation Committee includes: Professor William Atwell, Hobart And William Smith Colleges; Professor Thomas Nimick, US West Point Military Academy; Martin Heijdra, PhD, chief bibliographer at Princeton East Asian Library and Professor David Robinson, Colgate University.  Depending on the project, additional relevant scholars and specialists may augment this Committee, which will make final decisions on grant applications for approval by the Trustees.

Recipients of any Geiss Foundation grant will not be eligible to re-apply within four (4) years of receiving a grant.
